History

Founded in 1884, J.L. Long Middle School is one of the oldest middle schools in Dallas, Texas. The school was named after its founder, James L. Long, who served as a judge in the Dallas County Court from 1873-1884. Judge Long donated the land for the school and served as its first principal.

The school originally operated out of a two-story wooden building on Elm Street in downtown Dallas. In its early years, the school only offered classes up to the eighth grade. In 1897, the school moved to a new three-story brick building on Ross Avenue and began offering classes up to the 12th grade.

In 1925, the school was renamed J.L. Long-Rosenwald High School in honor of Julius Rosenwald, the president of Sears, Roebuck & Company. Rosenwald was a major philanthropist who helped fund the construction of over 5,000 schools for African-American students across the southern United States.

In 1935, the school moved to its current location on Bryan Street in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas. The school was renamed J.L. Long Middle School in 1971 when it reverted back to only offering classes up to the eighth grade.

Today, J.L. Long Middle School is a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School that serves approximately 1,100 students in grades 6-8. The school offers a rigorous academic curriculum that includes classes in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), foreign language, and the arts. J.L. Long Middle School is also home to a nationally recognized chess team, which has won numerous state and national championships.
