History
Richland Collegiate High School in Dallas TX had its humble beginnings in a small, two-story house on Ross Avenue in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas. The school was founded in September of 1884 by J.L. Chiles and W.T. White, who were both members of the Methodist Church. The school originally consisted of two classrooms, one for the boys and one for the girls. In its early years, the school struggled financially and was often forced to close its doors due to lack of funds. However, the community rallied around the school and helped to keep it afloat.
In 1886, the school moved to a new location on Elm Street and then again in 1888 to a larger facility on Houston Street. By this time, the school had grown to include a grammar school and a high school. In 1891, the name of the school was changed to Richland Collegiate Institute and in 1893 it became known as Richland College. The college continued to grow and in 1902 it moved to its current location on campus of Southern Methodist University.
Richland Collegiate High School has a long and proud history. It is one of the oldest high schools in Dallas and has educated many leaders in our community.
